Our client had a complicated medical history, with diabetes, hypertension and gallstones. She fractured one of her toes and had a below knee plaster cast fitted and was then admitted to hospital to have her gall bladder removed.
She was at high risk of thrombosis, but no precautionary steps were taken.
After the surgery, she had localised hypoxia and low blood pressure and despite a chest X-ray being clear, she was diagnosed with a chest infection and discharged. Over the following months, her condition worsened, with increasing breathlessness and fatigue. She was so short of breath whilst on holiday that she was admitted to hospital and found to have suffered vein thromboses that caused massive blockages in the blood supply to her lungs. She agreed to settle her claim for £10,000.
