Settlement for haemorrhage and lasting psychological symptoms caused by retained products of conception

We have represented a client with a claim arising from poor midwifery care following delivery of her child. It was our client’s case that a large piece of retained placenta was negligently missed during her daughter’s birth which took place by caesarean section.

The failure to detect and remove the piece of retained placenta resulted in our client experiencing continuing bleeding over the next day and a half, a subsequent and very distressing emergency operation, and a delayed discharge home from hospital as well as ongoing psychological symptoms (in the form of an adjustment disorder and continuing post-traumatic symptoms).

The NHS Trust has admitted the failings in the care provided and the parties have been able to resolve the claim.
