The travel law team at Penningtons Solicitors LLP won the International Travel Insurance Journal (ITIJ) award for Legal Services Provider of the Year at the ITIJ Conference in Barcelona on 1 November 2012. The team was shortlisted for the award following supporting votes received from the travel insurance industry and was nominated as the winner following written submissions to a panel of travel insurance experts.
The head of the travel law team, Mark Lee, a partner at Penningtons, was presented with the award at a gala dinner event attended by over 400 delegates from the industry. Mark said: “This is a great accolade for Penningtons and our travel team. The judges indicated that the award was given in recognition of our ‘outstanding achievement‘ during the last 12 months on behalf of both our travel insurer clients and individuals injured abroad. They also stated that they were impressed by the level of our involvement with key players in the travel insurance industry and noted our ability to offer innovative solutions to insurer clients and their policyholders.”
The team has been involved in several notable claims in the last year resulting in significant damages for individual policyholders and recoveries for insurers. Highlights include a road traffic accident in Belgium which settled for over €1.5 million and a successfully negotiated claim against a UK credit card provider for serious injuries following a ballooning accident in Turkey. Other significant ongoing claims include a complex case involving a traumatic amputation after a road accident in Cuba and a compensation claim for a paraplegic following a skiing accident in Austria.
