Recognition for Madrid and Piraeus shipping and insurance teams in The Legal 500 EMEA 2023

The shipping and insurance teams from Penningtons Manches Cooper’s Madrid and Piraeus offices have been ranked in the latest edition of The Legal 500 Europe, Middle East and Africa.

For work in Spain, the firm has been ranked in both the categories ‘transport: shipping’ and ‘insurance’. The shipping team, an ‘excellent and sound team for any shipping matters’, has been noted as ‘exceptional because of its legal expertise and knowledge of the commercial and operational issues of the maritime sector’. 

Partner Bernardo Ruiz Lima is ranked as a ‘leading individual’, with Victor Mata also individually ranked as a ‘next generation partner’, having been praised for his ‘great knowledge’, ‘practical experience’ and ‘exceptional responsiveness’. Partners Juan Alegre and Gonzalo Alvar are also noted for their expertise in the field. 

The insurance team, meanwhile, has been commended for its ‘excellent management of procedures’, ‘outstanding representation in court’ and its ‘extensive experience in out-of-court settlements, mediations and arbitrations’. The team is described as ‘innovative, flexible and [they] always get excellent results in conflict resolution’.

For Greece, the firm has been ranked in tier 2 of the ‘shipping litigation’ category, for its work on high-end and complex shipping litigation issues, including casualties, cargo claims and shipbuilding disputes. A testimonial describes the team’s ‘amazing response times with comprehensive advice and winning arguments’, before concluding ‘If you have a really contentious matter, this is the place to go.’ Partner Douglas Bateson, head of the Piraeus office, is named specifically for his ‘significant experience’.
