Penningtons Manches Cooper strengthens family law team with new partner and associate hires

Posted: 01/10/2024

Top 50 law firm Penningtons Manches Cooper has appointed highly regarded family lawyer Tom Amlot as partner within its private wealth group.

Tom joins the firm on 1 October bringing with him more than 20 years’ experience across all aspects of family law. From 2011, he was a partner at boutique firm Alexiou Fisher Philipps (which became AFP Bloom in February 2024).

He specialises in complex family law cases, having acted in some of the most difficult cases to pass through the courts during his career, including matters involving children and international relocations. Additionally, he has significant expertise in the cross-over between conventional family work and cases involving invasion of privacy. Tom is also a mediator and sits as a private financial dispute resolution judge.

Tom, who will be based in the firm’s London office, is expected to work closely with colleagues across several other expert practice areas within the wider private wealth group such as private client, immigration, reputation management and employment, as well as the residential property and yachts teams.

Two members of Tom’s current team will also join Penningtons Manches Cooper.

Lucy Brown will join as a senior associate. She specialises in high-net-worth family matters, which often involve disputes that have complex international, offshore, or financial elements. Many of Lucy’s cases involve corporate structures or jurisdiction issues.

Kate Williams will join as an associate. She has experience in a wide range of family law issues, including financial disputes and tax. Prior to her legal career, she worked at Deloitte as an M&A / private funds tax analyst.

Anna Worwood, head of Penningtons Manches Cooper’s family law team said: “We are thrilled to be welcoming Tom to the partnership. Not only is the breadth and depth of his experience second to none, he is hugely liked and respected in the family law community at both the domestic and international levels. He is a great fit for the family team, and for the wider private wealth group, and we are all very excited to be working with him.”

James Stewart, head of strategy for Penningtons Manches Cooper’s family law team and co-head of its private wealth group, said: “Tom is a first-class practitioner. His standing amongst his peers and his focus on high net-worth, international, and complex work will be a huge benefit to our team, and to the continued development of our private wealth group’s holistic offering.”

Tom Amlot commented: “The team at Penningtons Manches Cooper has a brilliant reputation and is extremely well respected in the family law world for both its technical expertise and client service. Lucy, Kate and I look forward to contributing to the team’s continued growth and being part of its ongoing success story.”

The Legal 500 describes Tom as “an exceptional family lawyer…especially good at dealing with international cases” and in Chambers Global HNW directory he is credited with “the confidence that comes from being utterly on top of your game.” He is also a Top Recommended lawyer in the Spear’s 500 2024.

Tom is a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, the membership officer of the family law committee of the International Bar Association, and is regularly asked to speak at international conferences.
