Profile

Aatif is a managing associate in the London office. He specialises in UK and EU financial services regulation, advising financial services businesses on a range of regulatory and transactional matters. Aatif’s clients include retail banks, investment banks, private banks, fund managers, fintech firms, commodities firms, wealth managers, insurance brokers and crypto firms. 

His practice includes advising on regulatory perimeter and financial promotions issues, cross-border marketing, PRA/FCA authorisation and change of control, SMCR approval, capital and conduct of business rules, MiFID II, EMIR, Basel 3.1, BRRD, AIFMD and other regulatory reforms, and payment services and e-money regulations. He is experienced in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, terms of business and product documentation for regulated financial services businesses. Aatif assists regulated businesses in handling PRA/FCA investigations, enforcement actions, and skilled person reports. He defends regulated professionals facing regulatory or internal investigations, as well as disciplinary and enforcement action. Aatif also advises businesses, both inside and outside the financial services sector, on compliance with anti-money laundering, anti-bribery and corruption and sanctions legislation. 

With over seven years of recent experience working in-house at a number of leading global banks (including Barclays, Wells Fargo, BNY Mellon, and Rothschild & Co), he has a good appreciation of the importance of delivering commercial, pragmatic and actionable advice at a reasonable cost. Prior to working in-house, Aatif was a counsel at a New York headquartered law firm, and a senior associate at leading US and UK-based firms. 

Recent work highlights

  • Drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements for a wealth manager, including fund co-manufacturing agreements, investment management agreements, and customer terms and conditions.
  • Advising a bank's FX hedging business on a variety of transactional matters, including client agreements, amendments/terminations, ISDAs, and delegated reporting agreements.
  • Advising a European credit fund manager on obtaining FCA change of control in relation to its acquisition of a UK asset manager.
  • Advising a distributor of virtual bank accounts/cards on its agreement with a technology provider.
  • Advising a compliance officer facing disciplinary proceedings, including advice on responding to allegations of breach of the FCA Conduct Rules.
