Hilary Aldred, Partner at Penningtons Manches

Profile

Hilary qualified in 1998 and joined Penningtons Manches Cooper as a partner in 2011. She has specialised in both contentious and non-contentious employment work for over 20 years and is particularly recognised for her expertise on a wide range of individual and collective employment issues. Hilary also advises on a wide range of HR problems, policies and strategy and has a particular interest in the management of re-organisations.  She has co-ordinated a number of wide scale restructurings in different businesses as well advising on industrial relations issues across businesses from FTSE 100 companies through to SME and not-for-profit organisations.

Experienced in all forms of employment litigation in the High Court and tribunals, Hilary advises on terminations, redundancies, compromise agreements, all aspects of discrimination and whistleblowing legislation, TUPE, restrictive covenants, remuneration and other contractual issues and, in addition, acts for senior employees, academics and partners.

As head of the firm’s education sector group, Hilary also deals with a number of broader education disputes, particularly for further and higher education institutions and colleges. She is recognised in both Chambers and Partners and Legal 500 as providing "pragmatic and highly distilled advice", and has been named 'lawyer of the year' in the latest edition of Best Lawyers for employment law in East Anglia.

Recent work highlights

  • Advising a major technology company on a redundancy programme across several sites which included managing a change in the contractual shift and overtime rates for the remainder of the workforce
  • Acting for a Canadian venture capital fund on the removal of the CEO and COO of a UK subsidiary including obtaining injunctive relief to prevent misuse of confidential information
  • Advising on the status of numerous atypical workers for the purposes of pensions and auto-enrolment compliance
  • Acting for a claimant on all aspects of a whistleblowing claim against a well-known charity and achieving a significant settlement to include a substantial sum for her loss of final salary pension rights
  • Acting for a college on the application of the relevant QAA codes of practice to its business including advising on the procedure for both a complaint and an appeal
