Profile

Sarah is a senior associate in the contentious private client team in London. Her experience spans a broad range of commercial matters with a particular focus on contentious trust and estate issues and wealth management issues for high net worth individuals and families, including multi-jurisdictional and cross border components.

She has acted as lead and junior counsel in New Zealand and the Cayman Islands’ senior courts, and has experience in dealing with a variety of trust, wills, and estate disputes, as well as handling breach of trust claims against trustees and executors, applications to remove and replace trustees and executors, blessing applications, mutual wills, lost wills, and various challenges to wills.

Before starting in the contentious private client team at Penningtons Manches Cooper, Sarah practised in New Zealand and the Cayman Islands. She is a member of the Contentious Trusts Association and is working towards a STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates, which includes an advanced certificate in trust disputes.  

Recent work highlights

  • Acting for a trustee company in relation to its replacement with a Cayman Islands trustee, and the transfer of trust assets in circumstances where the settlor and his family were the subject of fraud investigations by the Serious Fraud Office.
  • Assisting the professional trustee of a trust holding a collection of works by a well-known New Zealand artist (who was both non-verbal and illiterate) in the context of a dispute between the professional trustee and the artist’s co-trustee sister.
  • Acting for the Singapore-based director of a registered trustee company in defence of claims for breach of duty by the trustee, made by a Greek oligarch.
  • Acting as counsel for New Zealand’s largest statutory trustee company to advise on various contentious matters.
  • Representing one of two co-executors during the winding up of the estate of a high net worth individual in circumstances of discord between the co-executors, and also between the co-executors and the various charitable organisation beneficiaries of the estate.
