Profile

Tom is an associate in the employment team. He has expertise in the sports and technology sectors, acting for corporate clients, athletes, and senior executives, amongst others, advising on a broad range of employment law and sports matters.

He is experienced in conducting Employment Tribunal litigation in relation to unfair dismissal, whistleblowing, discrimination, and contractual or wages disputes, amongst other issues. Tom has undertaken Employment Tribunal advocacy and recently successfully negotiated settlement in a judicial mediation on behalf of his client. He gives HR support and training, both nationally and internationally, on a range of matters when preparing contracts and handbooks, as well as when advising on risks and strategy in relation to employment status, disciplinary hearings, dismissals, TUPE and redundancies. Tom also provides advice to employers and employees in relation to settlement agreements.

Having qualified as a solicitor in 2017, he is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association (ELA), and has worked on the ELA ethnicity pay reporting working group to assess the feasibility of ethnicity pay reporting obligations in a similar manner to gender pay gap reporting requirements. Tom is co-founder and a co-host of the sports team's podcast series, 'Fair play', on the challenges elite female athletes face throughout their career. 

Recent work highlights

  • Acting for an international athlete in relation to allegations of doping, resulting in a reduced ban for the client.
  • Advising clients in the housing association, technology, pharmaceutical and education sectors on strategy for allowing remote working from abroad.
  • Settling several multi-issue Employment Tribunal claims for housing association clients in relation to refusal of vaccinations during the Covid-19 pandemic, discrimination, harassment and maternity rights.
  • Advising a major distribution company in relation to a variation of contracts, redundancy consultation and TUPE transfer for just under 100 employees.
