Profile

James is a partner in the corporate team in Oxford who specialises in advising life sciences and technology companies. His work includes acquisitions and disposals, often with an international element; university spin-outs; venture capital funding transactions; joint ventures; corporate restructuring and re-organisations; and the use of employee incentives – including EMI options, growth shares and other structures.

He supports companies at all stages of their life cycle. Many of his clients are spin-outs from the University of Oxford, Imperial College London and other universities as well as technology transfer organisations who he works with on a long-term basis.

James is recognised in The Legal 500 directory as a next generation partner. He joined the firm in 2001 after training in the City of London. He has a first class degree in law from Lincoln College, Oxford and an LLM from Christ's College, Cambridge.

  • Acting for Seedrs, the equity crowdfunding pioneer, on its US$100 million acquisition by Republic via a scheme of arrangement.
  • Advising Seloxium, a new company developing methods to extract valuable metals from waste, on its spin-out from Oxford University and seed fundraising.
  • Acting for moa Technology, the Oxford crop protection discovery company, on its £35 million Series B funding round.
  • Advising First Light Fusion, an Oxford-based global leader in researching energy generation via inertial fusion, on its US$45 million Series C fundraising.
  • Advising Bramble Energy on its £35 million Series B fundraising to develop its hydrogen fuel cell technology.
